About

This site explores connections between people who appear in photographs from the Epstein Library dataset released by the U.S. Department of Justice.

It was created by Decoherence Media, a small nonprofit newsroom that uses open-source and data-driven methods to investigate authoritarian movements. For more information, read our guide or watch our video about the project.

The graph view on the homepage is an interactive network: nodes are people, and edges connect people who appear together in the same photograph. Node size indicates how many different people a given person appears in photos with, and node colors indicate that person's category.

Data processing used facial recognition (AWS Rekognition) with manual verification, network layout was computed with Gephi and visualized with D3.js.

Content Policy

Victim privacy is a priority for this project. People marked as victims are anonymized as "Victim 1", "Victim 2", etc, and their real names are not displayed.

Images that contain victims never served by this website, including as node and edge preview images. Victim nodes are kept in the network so the overall structure remains visible, but the image content associated with victims is not shown.

Images containing nudity (reviewed manually and with AWS Rekognition's DetectModerationLabels) are never served.

Individuals who only appear in photographs as a minor (based on estimated age and publicly available information) are not identified.
